Influencer arrested for befriending and fleecing businessmen via reels

Bengaluru police have arrested a social media influencer, identified as Vanitha, a resident of Sunkadakatte, for allegedly using Instagram reels to befriend and defraud local businessmen. The accused is accused of luring victims through her online presence and then swindling them of significant amounts of money.

Modus operandi of the accused

According to police officials, Vanitha would create engaging reels on Instagram to attract followers, particularly targeting affluent businessmen. She would then initiate conversations, build trust, and eventually persuade them to invest in fake schemes or lend her money under false pretenses. Once the money was transferred, she would cut off all communication.

The fraud came to light when one of the victims filed a complaint with the cybercrime cell. Investigations revealed multiple complaints against Vanitha, with the total amount defrauded estimated to be over Rs 50 lakh.

Vanitha has been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating and fraud. Further investigations are ongoing to trace the full extent of her network and identify other victims.

Impact and warnings

This case highlights the growing risk of social media fraud, where influencers misuse their reach to exploit followers. Police have urged the public to verify credentials before engaging in financial transactions with online acquaintances.
