The theatrical re-release of Aamir Khan's Oscar-nominated film Lagaan has been extended till June 18. The makers announced the re-release earlier this month on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, initially scheduled from June 12 to June 14. Following popular demand, screenings have been extended until June 18, according to a press release.
Original Release and Acclaim
The film, which originally released on June 15, 2001, was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. This period sports drama tells the story of a cricket match between a group of untrained villagers and their colonial masters. Lagaan was nominated in the Best Foreign Language category at the 74th Academy Awards and received widespread critical and commercial acclaim.
Cast and Music
Besides Khan, the film also starred Gracy Singh, British actors Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Rajendra Gupta, among others. The music was composed by A R Rahman and includes songs such as Ghanan Ghanan, Mitwa, Radha Kaise Na Jale, and O Rey Chhori, which still resonate with audiences.
Awards and Legacy
Lagaan won eight awards, including the Best Popular Film award at the 49th National Film Awards. Its re-release has been met with enthusiasm, prompting the extension to accommodate more viewers.
