A successful career and love are two dreams that every human secretly harbours. But what happens when you get both? An experience of true happiness. In the majestic hills of Dehradun, amidst the walls of the Indian Military Academy, a story of grit, love and national service came to light on Saturday.
The Commissioning Ceremony
Lieutenant Robin Singh Talan was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army during the Passing Out Parade. Watching him with pride in her eyes was his wife, Lieutenant Swati Kumari, a commissioned officer in the Indian Navy since 2021. Interestingly, what makes the couple truly unmissable is not just their uniforms, but also their love story.
From College to Colleagues
Robin Singh Talan, 28, from Greater Noida, and Swati Kumari, 27, first met during their college years. Their story began as a young romance but soon transformed into that of shared dreams, values and partnership. Dedicated to wearing the uniform and serving the country, the couple prepared together for the demanding entrance examinations required to join the armed forces.
In 2021, Swati cleared the rigorous selection process and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Navy. Since then, she has been serving with distinction in the Navy. Robin initially joined the Indian Air Force as a Corporal (airman). While serving in the IAF, he continued to pursue his goal of becoming a commissioned officer. In 2022, he cleared the competitive exam for the Army Cadet Corps (ACC) wing in the Indian Military Academy. He underwent intense training at IMA, and on Saturday, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.
Locking the Love
In 2024, Robin and Swati tied the knot, with their marriage strengthening their bond further. Now, they live their dream of serving the country together. They serve as an exemplary couple to the rest of the nation, an Army officer and a Navy officer, united by love but also their dedication to their nation.
The couple also made an emotional sight at the commissioning ceremony at IMA. As hundreds of officers stepped out of the iconic Chetwode Building to join the Indian Army, Robin Singh Talan took his place among them. His wife, Lieutenant Swati Kumari watched from the spectator stands, dressed in her Navy uniform.
Robin's father, Dhirendra Singh, a retired Sub Major (Honorary Lieutenant) from the Indian Army, was also present to see his son's achievement. Both of us had been preparing together for the entrance exams to join the armed forces. I joined the Indian Air Force as a Corporal. Subsequently, I cracked the exam of the Army Cadet College at IMA in 2022 before undergoing the necessary training to be finally commissioned as an officer in the Army today, said Robin.
Immensely proud to see him as a commissioned officer. Despite joining the Air Force as a Corporal, he continued his efforts to get commissioned as an officer in the Army. We’ve finally realised our dream of serving the country as officers, added Swati.
From college sweethearts to commissioned officers in the services, Robin and Swati's story is an example of when two people get together with a shared dream, the hurdles become just a bit easier to cross and the happiness of fulfilling it is even greater.
