Back in October 2024, three Chilean nationals allegedly hit the homes of both Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce as part of a sophisticated South American burglary ring that specifically targeted professional athletes. Their method was embarrassingly simple. The burglars identified targets using publicly available schedules and social media activity, then entered homes through broken windows or by prying open sliding doors with crowbars. No elaborate heist. No Ocean's Eleven energy. Just crowbars and Instagram. Kelce was playing an away game when his home was hit on October 7, he reportedly lost over $20,000 in cash. Mahomes' home was burglarized the same week.

Investigators found a photo of the men posing triumphantly with a stolen safe and scattered jewelry, taken shortly after a November 2024 burglary targeting Milwaukee Bucks player Bobby Portis. An FBI special agent noted that one of the suspects was wearing a Kansas City Chiefs shirt in the photo, presumably stolen from one of the most famous tight ends on the planet. They robbed Travis Kelce. Then wore his team's shirt. To a photoshoot. With the evidence. Criminally bold, truly.
How a retired tennis player brought them down
The arrest itself is almost as chaotic as the crimes. Two of the alleged culprits were nabbed in Argentina last week after breaking into the home of former tennis star Juan Martín del Potro and that bust helped authorities track down the third member of the gang. The three suspects — Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, Bastian Jimenez Freraut, and Pablo Zuniga Cartes are all Chilean nationals currently held in Chile awaiting extradition to either the United States or Argentina. A 2009 US Open winner ultimately being the reason NFL stars get justice is not a sentence anyone saw coming.
The ring also targeted Joe Burrow, Luka Dončić, and others across multiple sports, the FBI had even formally warned athletes about organised theft groups monitoring their public schedules and social media. The stolen items included expensive watches, valuable jewelry, and sports souvenirs, including jerseys. The NFL warned players. The NBA warned players. And yet, somewhere in Kansas City, a crowbar met a sliding door and nobody was home. Lesson learned, hopefully.
