Natalie Cassidy, best known for her acting career, has embarked on a new professional path following the death of her father. The actress has officially begun training to become a carer, a decision inspired by her experience caring for her father in his final moments. Her journey will be documented in a new feature titled 'Natalie Cassidy: Caring Together,' set to air on the BBC.
Natalie Cassidy on Becoming a Carer
According to reports from the BBC, Cassidy is now training to become a professional carer with the goal of helping as many people as possible. Her upcoming show will chronicle the entire process, from obtaining the necessary licenses to the day-to-day realities of the job. During an interview with the channel, Cassidy emphasized her desire to shed light on the struggling care system in Britain, highlighting financial pressures, lack of resources, and other issues negatively impacting the industry.
Cassidy explained her motivation, stating, 'Caring for Dad right up until the end of his life, and losing him, was one of the most painful things I've ever had to do, but the people I met have changed my life and are so inspirational. That's what spurred me on to do this.' She added, 'I've only ever had one job, but I've always wondered what I would have done if I wasn't an actress.'
Natalie Cassidy Recalls Caring for Her Father
In the interview, Cassidy also reflected on her father's final moments. Her father passed away in April 2021 after falling ill. She shared, 'The final moments were breathtakingly hard but quite incredible really. I just remember holding his hand and stroking his arm, and saying, 'It's OK, you can go now, we're all good, you've done your job.''
To ensure her father could remain independent while receiving support, the family moved into an annexe home. Cassidy credited Linda, her father's carer, for enabling her to balance caregiving with her acting career. The new show aims to provide an intimate look at Cassidy's transformation from actress to carer, while also advocating for systemic improvements in the care sector.
