An NRI couple has filed a police complaint after jewellery valued at Rs 21 lakh went missing from their residence in Akhbarnagar, Ahmedabad. The incident came to light after a prolonged delay, as the couple had been traveling between India and the United States.
Details of the Incident
According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged with the Ghatlodia police, the couple frequently travels to the US, where they operate a motel business. During their trips, they typically store their valuables in a bank locker for safety. However, in September last year, after returning from the US, they withdrew the jewellery from the locker and kept it in a cupboard on the upper floor of their home.
The complainant stated that the valuables, including gold mangalsutras, diamond earrings, rings, and chains, were last seen on December 28, 2025. The theft was discovered on April 15 this year while the family was packing for a flight back to the US scheduled for April 16. Upon finding the jewellery missing, they searched the entire house but found no trace of the items.
Delay in Filing Complaint
As their flight tickets were already confirmed, the couple departed for the US without immediately reporting the theft to the police. They returned to Ahmedabad on May 17 and conducted another thorough search of their residence. Subsequently, they approached the police on May 19 to file a formal complaint.
Stolen Items
The stolen valuables include a rose-gold jewellery set, two mangalsutras, diamond-studded ornaments, and several gold items weighing a total of 21 tolas. The estimated value of the stolen property is approximately Rs 21 lakh.
Police Investigation
Police officials stated that the complainant suspects their domestic help may be involved in the theft. Based on the complaint, the Ghatlodia police have registered a case of burglary against an unidentified person and have launched an investigation to trace the missing jewellery.
Authorities are examining all possible leads and have urged anyone with information to come forward. The investigation is ongoing.
