Panaji: Padmashree awardee, thespian and classical artist, Prasad Sawkar (97) passed away on Wednesday, marking the end of a long and distinguished career in performing arts. He was widely regarded for his contributions to natya sangeet and Marathi musical theatre, and was honoured with the Padmashree in 2006.

Early Life and Family Background

Born into a theatrical family in Goa, Sawkar was deeply influenced by his father Raghuvir Sawkar, a celebrated stage performer awarded the honorary title of Rangadevata. His early exposure to theatre in Mapusa sparked a lifelong devotion to the stage, leading to a debut performance in the play Kareeti Purva, which earned him immediate recognition.

Career in Mumbai and Marathi Cinema

Sawkar later moved to Mumbai, where he became a prominent figure in Marathi musical theatre, performing in acclaimed productions. He also earned acclaim in Marathi cinema with notable roles in Sant Gora Kumbhar and Pedgauche Shahane.

Musical Training and Achievements

A distinguished vocalist, Sawkar trained under maestros from multiple gharanas, including Pt Narayanrao Vyas, Pt Govindrao Agni, and Pt Nivruttibua Sarnaik, which shaped his command over both classical and stage music traditions. His mastery earned him the title of “Sangeetratna.”

Later Years and Legacy

After Marathi theatre experienced a decline, he returned to Goa, where he continued to engage with music and his personal passion for fishing. Sawkar is survived by his wife Shalini, also a vocalist, two sons Shekhar and Salil, and grandchildren.
