Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the Indian diaspora in Auckland, New Zealand, on July 11, 2026, outlined several government initiatives aimed at supporting the Sikh community and preserving its religious heritage. The address covered steps to facilitate pilgrimage, maintain traditions, and resolve community concerns.
Golden Temple FCRA Issue Resolved
Modi stated that the government promptly addressed difficulties related to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) that were affecting sewa (service) at the Golden Temple. He noted that Sikh community members had brought this issue to the government's attention, and immediate action was taken to resolve it.
Hemkund Sahib Ropeway Project
The Prime Minister highlighted the construction of a ropeway to Hemkund Sahib, a high-altitude Sikh pilgrimage site in the Himalayas. The project aims to make the arduous journey easier, particularly for elderly devotees, improving access to the sacred shrine.
Veer Bal Diwas Observance
Modi referred to the government's decision to observe December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas, commemorating the sacrifice of the four Sahibzadas (sons) of Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Gujri. He said this annual observance has helped introduce children across India to their courage and sacrifice.
Sacred Jore Sahib Relics
The Prime Minister recounted the journey of the sacred Jore Sahib, relics associated with Guru Gobind Singh. He said Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri informed him that his family had preserved these relics for nearly 300 years, bringing them safely to Delhi during Partition. After consultations with Sikh scholars and religious experts, the government decided to place the relics at Takht Sri Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, where devotees can now pay respects.
Diaspora Engagement
Modi invited diaspora members to visit the shrine during trips to India, calling it a privilege to have witnessed the installation of the sacred relics at Patna Sahib. He also praised the Sikh Gurus' message of service, courage, equality, and compassion, noting that gurdwaras worldwide have become centers of selfless service.
During the Afghanistan crisis, Modi said the government ensured that sacred saroops of the Guru Granth Sahib were brought back to India with due reverence, underscoring the commitment to Sikh heritage.
