Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann after the state government initiated action on stray dogs under a Supreme Court order. The actor urged the Punjab government to handle the issue with compassion while also addressing public safety concerns. Her appeal came after the state announced that stray dogs would be removed from high-footfall public spaces, shelters would be created, and legally permissible steps would be taken in cases involving rabid, incurably ill, or dangerous dogs.
Raveena Tandon's Appeal to Bhagwant Mann on Stray Dogs
According to Hindustan Times, Raveena shared a note on Instagram directly addressing the Punjab chief minister. She wrote, 'Honourable CM Bhagwant Mann ji, the recent observations around the Supreme Court verdict on stray animal management have sparked important conversations across the country. While public safety is extremely important, I sincerely hope the interpretation and implementation of the verdict continues to remain humane and balanced.'
Raveena urged the state to choose measures that protect both people and animals. She added, 'Compassionate solutions such as sterilisation, vaccination, proper shelters and structured rehabilitation can help protect both citizens and animals.' The actor also said Punjab could lead by example. She wrote, 'I truly believe that with the support of authorities, animal welfare organisations and experts, Punjab can set an example of handling this sensitive issue with both responsibility and kindness. How we treat the voiceless ultimately reflects who we are as a society.'
Punjab Stray Dog Removal Drive After Supreme Court Order
As reported earlier, Bhagwant Mann said Punjab will implement the Supreme Court's May 19 directions 'in true letter and spirit.' He cited 'growing concern' over stray dog attacks in several parts of the state and said children, senior citizens, and families should move freely in public spaces without fear. Mann stated that stray dogs will be removed from all high-footfall public spaces. He also said the government will create and maintain enough dog shelters where the animals can receive proper care.
The chief minister noted that legally permissible measures, including euthanasia, will apply only in cases involving rabid, incurably ill, or demonstrably dangerous and aggressive dogs that pose a threat to human life. These steps will follow the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the ABC Rules. Actor Sonu Sood also reacted earlier, calling some videos linked to the drive 'very disturbing.' He said dogs are loyal animals and added that people in local areas often know which dogs are harmful.
