Comedian and actor Russell Brand has taken a public, humorous jab at his ex-wife, pop superstar Katy Perry, over her new romantic link with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The remarks were made during a public event, adding a fresh chapter to the pair's long-documented history.
Brand's Public Dig At The TPUSA Event
Speaking at a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) gathering in Phoenix, Brand did not hold back his feelings about Perry's latest partner. He addressed the audience, acknowledging that Perry's mother was present in the room. Brand stated he still loves Perry and was fine with her previous partner, actor Orlando Bloom. However, he expressed clear disdain for her current beau, Justin Trudeau.
"Look, Katy Perry, I was married to her. I love her still, and I’m glad that her mom’s in the room to hear me say this. I was OK with Orlando Bloom, but Justin Trudeau? Come on, man! Don’t put me in a category with that guy. That globalist stooge," Brand said, blending criticism with his signature humour.
Katy Perry's High-Profile Relationship Timeline
Katy Perry's love life has consistently made headlines. She met Russell Brand on the set of the film Get Him to the Greek in 2009. The couple married shortly after but separated in 2012 after just two years of marriage.
Following her split from Brand, Perry had an on-again, off-again relationship with singer John Mayer, which finally ended in 2015. In 2016, she began dating actor Orlando Bloom. Their relationship saw a brief pause in 2017 before they reunited, got engaged in 2019, and welcomed their daughter Daisy in 2020. The couple called off their engagement in June of this year.
The news of a new man in Perry's life first surfaced when she hinted at a new relationship during a concert in Prague on October 30, though she did not reveal his identity then. She later confirmed the romance with Justin Trudeau subtly, by sharing photos from her trip to Japan on Instagram, which quietly included the former Canadian PM.
The Painful End of Brand and Perry's Marriage
In a revealing 2013 interview with Vogue, Katy Perry opened up about the painful dissolution of her marriage to Russell Brand. She confessed to having loved him deeply when they wed. However, the relationship ended abruptly and painfully.
Perry revealed that Brand ended their marriage by sending her a text message on December 31, 2011, and she never heard from him again. She explained that while Brand initially wanted an equal partner, he struggled as her career soared and she became "the boss" on her tours.
"At first when I met him, he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal, and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness," Perry told Vogue. She described his behaviour as controlling during that phase, which caused her deep hurt and left lasting emotional scars.
Russell Brand's recent comments, made in the presence of Perry's mother, have reignited public interest in this chapter of their lives, contrasting his past silence with his present very public critique of her new partner.
