Actor Sharib Hashmi is steadfastly supporting his wife, Nasreen Hashmi, as she confronts cancer for the sixth time after a recent relapse. Despite the emotional toll and financial strain, Hashmi strives to maintain hope. “I am trying to keep my mind positive; otherwise, it becomes very difficult to cope. The treatment is ongoing, and thankfully she is responding well. My wife is a strong fighter, and her spirit gives us hope. However, it is a long journey as the cancer has spread throughout her body,” he shares.
Nasreen's Cancer Journey
Nasreen was first diagnosed with mouth cancer in August 2018 and has since undergone five surgeries to remove tumors. After her last surgery in September 2024, she was in remission, but the disease returned earlier this year. Recalling the discovery of the relapse, Sharib explains, “She had a cough for two to three months, and since many were coughing due to poor air quality, we thought it was that. An X-ray showed no issues. But in mid-February, she developed a blister in her mouth, and we immediately consulted a doctor, who recommended a biopsy and PET scan, leading to the new diagnosis.”
Spread of Cancer and Treatment
The cancer, previously confined to her mouth, has now spread to multiple organs, including the lungs, bones, and areas near the heart and liver. Nasreen is currently undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy under the same doctor recommended by actor Tannishtha Chatterjee. Due to extensive spread, surgery is no longer an option.
Financial Challenges
Sharib opened up about the immense financial burden. “I spend as much time as possible with her, but I also need to earn money as expenses are exorbitant. I require more work to cover her medical bills since insurance cannot fully cover the treatment cost,” he says. The actor admits that his priority is not project quality but securing enough work to manage expenses. “I cannot afford to refuse any work right now, as last year was financially difficult, and this year has started similarly. I am seeking more work to avoid worrying about treatment costs. We are considering targeted therapy after the current regime, which will be very expensive. I hope to afford it independently,” he adds.
Impact on Children
Discussing how their children are coping, Sharib shared that they explained the situation honestly together. “Our son is older and understands the gravity, but I feel both children have matured prematurely due to this cancer. They have witnessed our struggle since 2018, which has impacted them, but they often hide their feelings to spare us.”
For now, Sharib focuses on staying emotionally strong and optimistic, hoping his wife overcomes this difficult phase and recovers well.
