Tibetans Celebrate Dalai Lama's 91st Birthday Across Borders

The 14th Dalai Lama turned 91 on Monday, July 6, as Tibetans worldwide celebrated their spiritual leader with prayers, traditional dances, cultural performances, and heartfelt wishes. The main celebrations took place in Ladakh, where the Dalai Lama is currently staying after undergoing knee-replacement surgery, while his exile home of Dharamsala also saw an outpouring of faith.

Hundreds of Tibetans gathered at the Shewatsel Teaching Ground in Leh for the birthday event. Sikyong Penpa Tsering, President of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), senior Buddhist monks, dignitaries, and devotees attended the celebrations. Thousands lined up to catch a glimpse of the Tibetan spiritual leader and seek his blessings. A birthday cake in the form of a ritual cake was presented to the Dalai Lama during the festivities.

During the celebration, the Dalai Lama tapped an iPad to launch the animated film “Man of Peace,” which pays tribute to his lifelong message of compassion, non-violence, and universal responsibility. CTA president Penpa Tsering also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the Dalai Lama's enduring influence.

Celebrations in Dharamsala

In Dharamsala, hundreds of Tibetans gathered at the Tsuglakhang Temple in McLeodganj to honour their revered leader. Monks chanted prayers for the Dalai Lama’s long life as cultural troupes performed traditional Tibetan dances and songs, reflecting the rich heritage he has worked to preserve during more than six decades in exile. Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa, the chief guest, along with Tibetan officials, cut the birthday cake at the temple complex. Artists from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts presented a traditional dance during the celebrations.
