Why Queen Maeve Was Missing from The Boys Season 5

The hit series 'The Boys' has concluded with its fifth season, leaving fans with a mix of closure and lingering questions. The finale saw the two main leads meet their end, while the remaining members of the titular group moved on to peaceful lives, some even starting families. However, many viewers were puzzled by the absence of key characters from earlier seasons, particularly Queen Maeve, portrayed by Dominique McElligott. Here is the explanation behind her absence and why the character was written out of the final season.

Why Dominique McElligott Did Not Appear in Season 5

In an interview with Goldie Derby, showrunner Eric Kripke addressed the lack of Queen Maeve in the final season. Kripke revealed that he had discussions with McElligott about a potential return, expressing his genuine desire to include her character. However, he clarified that the decision was mutual, as McElligott has largely stepped away from acting and declined to reprise her role. Kripke stated, 'I was in conversation with Dom. We still email once in a while. She's mostly retired from acting, and her schedule didn't work out. It was all a very friendly, non-controversial thing. I was like, 'If we wrote it, would you do it?' And she's like, 'I'm kind of out of it, and I'm busy, and unfortunately I can't, but send everyone my love.' That was sort of it.' Kripke added that he would have 'loved' to have the character back, but ultimately it was not feasible.

Queen Maeve's Last Appearance in the Series

Queen Maeve last appeared in the season 3 finale, where she sacrificed her powers to help defeat Soldier Boy. Subsequently, she faked her own death and chose to live a quiet life with Elena, away from the chaos of the supes. Despite her absence, the character was referenced in the series finale. In a brief scene, Annie advises Marie to 'never meet' her heroes, saying of Queen Maeve, 'She was bitter, she was checked out. She gave away so many parts of herself, there was nothing left. ... I swore to myself I would never let that happen to me, but it did.'
