A tragic incident occurred in Pune's Ambegaon taluka on Sunday evening, where a 21-year-old woman drowned in the right canal of Dimbhe dam at Nighotwadi village. The woman, identified as Swapna Bhangare, had met a man she befriended on social media, but the encounter allegedly turned violent, leading to her death.

Details of the Incident

The accused, Ramesh Kadale (25), a resident of Junnar taluka, was rescued by villagers after he jumped into the canal. He was later arrested on a murder charge. The victim's body was recovered on Monday morning after an extensive search.

Inspector Shrikant Kankal of Manchar police stated, "We have arrested the accused under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita."

Background of the Victim and Accused

Swapna Bhangare, a graduate, worked at the reception desk of a construction site along the Pune-Nashik highway at Nighotwadi. She had been in contact with Kadale through a social media platform for the past two months. The two decided to meet in person for the first time on Sunday evening.

Kadale, who studied up to Class X and worked as a daily wager, allegedly consumed gutka and used abusive language during the meeting. The encounter led to a heated argument, with Kadale claiming that Bhangare pushed him first.

Sequence of Events

  • Kadale allegedly dragged Bhangare towards the canal and pushed her into the water.
  • A local resident witnessed the incident and alerted villagers, who rescued Kadale from the canal and handed him over to police.
  • Despite an immediate search, Bhangare could not be located on Sunday evening.
  • Police and rescue personnel resumed the search on Monday morning and recovered her body, which was sent for post-mortem examination.

Inspector Kankal confirmed that the accused is in custody and investigations are ongoing.
