K K Harshina, who endured five years of suffering after a surgical artery forceps was left inside her abdomen due to alleged medical negligence at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (MCH), has been appointed as an office assistant at the same facility under the hospital development society. The appointment order was issued on Monday following a directive from Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan. Harshina met the minister earlier in the day to discuss her case.
Meeting with Chief Minister
Harshina also met Chief Minister V D Satheesan, who assured her of support for follow-up treatment and compensation for the ordeal she endured. Expressing gratitude, Harshina stated that both the Chief Minister and the Health Minister fulfilled the assurances given to her during her protest in Kozhikode under the previous government. 'I have no words to express my gratitude towards them,' she said.
Background of the Case
The case dates back to 2017 when Harshina underwent her third caesarean section at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health, which is attached to Kozhikode MCH. During the procedure, a surgical artery forceps was allegedly left inside her abdomen. For nearly five years, she suffered from severe pain, recurrent infections, and other complications. Initially, doctors attributed her symptoms to issues related to surgical stitches.
In September 2022, after seeking treatment at a private hospital, medical examinations and a CT scan revealed the presence of a metallic object inside her abdomen. The forceps was subsequently removed through surgery at Kozhikode MCH. Harshina's ordeal highlights the consequences of medical negligence and the importance of accountability in healthcare settings.
The appointment and promised compensation mark a step toward justice for Harshina, who has shown remarkable resilience throughout her struggle. The Kerala government's actions demonstrate a commitment to addressing medical errors and supporting victims.
