Akshaye Khanna is set to make his Telugu debut in 'Mahakali', a film directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru and part of the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe. The movie, which gained attention due to the success of 'Hanu-Man', features Khanna in the role of Shukracharya, the revered teacher of the Asuras (demons). Recent reports shed light on what attracted the 'Dhurandhar' star to this mythological superhero film.
A Shift from Hindi Action to Mythological Cinema
Following the blockbuster success of 'Dhurandhar', Akshaye Khanna opted for a completely different path. Instead of signing another Hindi action film, he chose 'Mahakali', marking his first foray into the mythological superhero genre. The film is a key addition to the expanding Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe and stars Bhoomi Shetty in the lead role. Khanna recently completed shooting his portions for the movie, having joined the project in May 2025. He expressed enthusiasm about being part of this cinematic universe.
Why Akshaye Khanna Agreed to Play Shukracharya
According to a report by Mid-day, the 'Chhaava' actor was primarily drawn to the complexity of Shukracharya's character. In Hindu mythology, Shukracharya is known as the wise and respected teacher of the Asuras, guiding them in their battles against the gods. One of his notable powers is the ability to revive dead demons. In 'Mahakali', the titular character stands against the demon army, placing her and Shukracharya on opposing sides. However, the character is not depicted as purely evil; instead, he is portrayed as wise, intelligent, and misunderstood. This emotional conflict is reportedly what Khanna found most appealing about the role.
Shoot Progressing in Kolkata
The film's team shot a lengthy schedule between February and April this year. The final schedule is currently underway in Kolkata. On May 9, the crew reportedly filmed scenes near the Dakshineswar Temple. The makers aim to complete principal photography by July. In addition to 'Mahakali', Akshaye Khanna will also appear in the courtroom drama 'Ikka' alongside Sunny Deol, which is set for an OTT release on Netflix.
