A tragic incident has come to light in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh, where a young woman and her lover allegedly died by suicide after their families opposed their relationship due to caste differences. Their bodies were discovered hanging from a tree in the Marka police station area, approximately 55 kilometres from the district headquarters.
Discovery of the Bodies
On Wednesday morning, villagers found the bodies of Roshni (19) and Subhash (20) hanging from a babool tree in a field about 200 metres from the village of Andhav. The victims had used a single saree as a noose. The discovery came after both families had searched for them through the night. Roshni had left home around 10 pm on Tuesday, dressed in all her jewellery, and Subhash was also missing from his home.
Background of the Couple
Roshni was the daughter of Rajkumar Yadav, a farmer, and had four sisters and one brother. Subhash was the son of Ghanshyam Paswan, a labourer, and lived about 150 metres from Roshni's house. According to villagers, the couple had been in a relationship for two years. Both families were aware of the relationship but were unwilling to accept it due to caste differences.
Marriage Arranged Elsewhere
Despite the relationship, Roshni's family arranged her marriage to Jag Prasad Yadav of Bhoori village in the Bisanda police station area. The wedding took place on May 7, and Jag Prasad worked as a labourer outside the village. Thirteen days after her wedding, Roshni died by suicide along with Subhash. After the wedding, Roshni was brought back to her parents' home on May 16 for the Chauthi ritual and had been staying there since.
Police Investigation
Marka police station personnel, along with a forensic team, arrived at the scene and collected evidence. At 2 pm, police completed the punchnama and sent both bodies to Banda Medical College for post-mortem examination. Additional Superintendent of Police Shivraj Singh confirmed that the bodies of a young man and a young woman were found hanging from a tree. He stated that the field unit and forensic team have conducted an investigation, and further action will be taken based on written complaints from the families.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the tragic consequences of caste-based opposition to relationships. Authorities are investigating the case, and the families have been urged to file formal complaints for further legal action.
