Louisa Levy Talks About 'Off Campus' and the Allie-Dean Storyline
While the main focus of the first season and the book is on Hannah and Garrett, the introduction of Allie and Dean in an episode caused a stir online. This is because their story has a separate book dedicated to them, which fans assumed would be the same for the series. Speaking to Variety, Levy commented on this and addressed scenes where Logan and Dean were swapped. She stated, 'I love that scene in the books, and I certainly would have loved to do the Dean version. But by changing it to Logan, it allowed us to play on his crush and support his story in a way that kiss doesn't necessarily support Dean's story this season. We launched Logan's feelings in the pilot and this let us deepen that slow burn. It just made more narrative sense for where each character is going.'
Louisa Levy on How She Approached the 'Off Campus' Books
The writer revealed that while she was aware of the series' popularity, she didn't fully know how big it was. She added, 'I don't think I was fully aware of just how popular they were — I keep discovering new things. It was really important to me to honor the fans and their favorite moments. We had eight episodes, so we did our best to bring those critical moments to screen.' Furthermore, she noted that an executive from the studio, Brianna Kaufman, was a 'superfan' who initially brought the book idea to the studio. Levy shared that Kaufman and another producer were by her side to ensure she didn't stray too much from the original plot.
