Former Information and Broadcasting secretary Shashi Shekhar Vempati has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The appointment was made by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Wednesday. Vempati, a 1994-batch Indian Information Service officer, will succeed Prasoon Joshi, whose term ended in August 2023.
Background and Experience
Shashi Shekhar Vempati brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as the CEO of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and as an additional secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. His tenure at NFDC was marked by efforts to promote Indian cinema globally and support independent filmmakers. Vempati also played a key role in the organization of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the development of the National Film Heritage Mission.
Reactions and Expectations
The film industry has largely welcomed the appointment, with many hoping that Vempati will bring a more progressive and transparent approach to film certification. Some filmmakers have expressed optimism that the new chairperson will address long-standing concerns about censorship and the need for clearer guidelines. However, others have called for reforms to the CBFC's functioning, including reducing the number of cuts demanded and ensuring greater consistency in decisions.
Vempati's appointment comes at a time when the CBFC has faced criticism for its handling of several films, with debates over artistic freedom and censorship intensifying. The new chairperson is expected to take charge immediately and will serve a three-year term.
