Sherr Movie Review: A Gritty Marketplace Drama with Routine Storytelling

The Times of India, May 15, 2026, 10:53 PM IST, by Susmita Sameera. The Kannada film 'Sherr', released on April 15, 2026, is a drama set against the backdrop of a gritty marketplace controlled by two rival gangs shaped by entirely different principles. One group is led by Adhyaksharu (Bala Rajwadi), a respected elder who provides orphaned youngsters with shelter, work, and a sense of belonging. Among them is Shivu (Kiran Raj), a compassionate and loyal man who treats his friends like brothers and considers the community his family. In contrast stands Gilli (Chris Rodrigue), a ruthless and psychopathic gangster involved in violent crimes and illegal activities, operating under the protection of corrupt politician Dhan Raj (Shobhraj), who uses the gang to execute his unlawful dealings.

The story takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of Bhuvana (Surekha Venkatesh), a woman fleeing from a dangerous situation in search of a safe place to begin a new life. As she enters the turbulent world of the marketplace, the narrative gradually unfolds layers of illegal drug dealings, murders, unclaimed dead bodies, medical mafia operations, and the nexus between corrupt politicians and law enforcement. Alongside these developments, the mystery surrounding Bhuvana and her past remains one of the key aspects through which the story moves forward.

Kiran Raj, known for his popularity on television, takes a significant step towards establishing himself on the big screen with this action-oriented commercial entertainer. The film gives him ample scope through action sequences, dance numbers, and mass-elevation moments, and he carries the role with confidence and ease. Surekha Venkatesh delivers a decent performance as the female lead, while Chris Rodrigue effectively portrays the menacing antagonist. Bala Rajwadi and Shobhraj provide solid support in their respective roles, and Tanisha Kuppanda appears convincingly as a police officer. Veena Sunder, Yash Shetty, and the supporting cast also contribute effectively within their limited screen presence.

Technically, Sherr remains average across most departments. Although the film attempts to combine action, crime, and social issues within a commercial framework, the execution lacks consistency. The screenplay often feels cluttered and uneven, with several portions appearing outdated and predictable. While the film succeeds in delivering the conventional elements expected from a mass entertainer, it struggles to bring novelty or emotional depth to its narrative, ultimately leaving the experience familiar rather than engaging.

The film has received a critic's rating of 2.0 out of 5, and users have similarly rated it 2.0. The trailer, running at 2 minutes and 44 seconds, is available for viewing.
