On May 16, representatives from the Tamil movie industry met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to discuss several demands, including permission for all movies to be screened with five shows per day across the state. The meeting covered theatre reforms, subsidies for low-budget films, and entertainment taxes. Following the discussion, the government has taken a major decision benefiting the film industry.
Special Show Rules Explained
As per the existing Tamil Nadu Theatre Regulation Rules of 1957, theatres currently operate four shows per day under C-form licence conditions. A fifth additional show is permitted with prior permission from district authorities on festivals and public holidays. Now, after reviewing the industry request, the state government has officially revised the rules. New Tamil films will now be allowed five shows per day for the first seven days after release. Additionally, five shows per day will be permitted on weekends, public holidays, and local festival days, making screening more flexible for exhibitors.
No Separate Approval Needed for Special Shows in the First Week
The revised order further simplifies the process for theatre owners. The Tamil Nadu government announced that for the first seven days of a new film release, and during weekends or holidays, no separate permission from licensing authorities will be required to conduct five shows. This move is expected to reduce paperwork and assist theatre operators in managing increased demand during busy periods.
The decision marks a significant step forward for the Tamil film industry, addressing long-standing requests for more flexible screening schedules. Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, anticipating higher revenue and better audience access to new releases. The government's proactive approach in revising decades-old rules reflects its commitment to supporting the entertainment sector.
