Vineeth Sreenivasan on Lokah's Success & Malayalam Cinema's Future
Vineeth Sreenivasan: Lokah Success Boosts Malayalam Cinema

Vineeth Sreenivasan Hails 'Lokah' as a Game-Changer for Malayalam Cinema

Despite his recent directorial venture Karma underperforming at the box office, the multi-talented Vineeth Sreenivasan remains a steadfast optimist about the future of Malayalam cinema. The acclaimed actor, director, and singer recently expressed his immense enthusiasm for the phenomenal success of Dulquer Salmaan's film, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan.

Lokah's Triumph: A New Wave of Confidence

In a candid conversation with OTT Play, Vineeth revealed that the success of 'Lokah' is not just a personal victory for its team but a significant morale booster for the entire industry. "The success of Lokah gives all of us immense confidence," he stated. He elaborated that such large-scale successes are crucial for uplifting the spirits of both filmmakers and investors, especially in a climate where OTT deals are no longer a guaranteed safety net.

"These days, there’s no certainty that OTT deals will materialise, and naturally, producers are apprehensive about investing beyond a certain limit," Vineeth explained. "But when films like this succeed, it restores faith among filmmakers who wish to push boundaries — especially when they have to convince producers to back such projects." He highlighted that both 'Lokah' and his own film 'Karma' were substantial risks, underscoring the courage required to attempt diverse storytelling.

The Crucial Role of OTT Platforms and Global Audiences

Vineeth Sreenivasan strongly emphasised the need for stronger support from OTT platforms to nurture and sustain regional cinema. He argued that robust backing from streaming services would empower producers to greenlight more varied and ambitious projects. "It’s important for OTT platforms to extend stronger support to Malayalam cinema," he asserted. "That’s what would give producers the courage to attempt more diverse films. Without that backing, anyone making such movies is taking a major risk."

Furthermore, the filmmaker pointed to a promising trend: the expanding global footprint of Malayalam films. He attributed this growth partly to the increasing migration of Malayalis to countries like the UK and Canada over the past five to six years. This diaspora, he noted, not only flocks to theatres to watch new releases but also actively promotes these films to their non-Malayali friends and colleagues abroad, significantly widening the industry's international reach.
