Vivek Agnihotri's 'The Bengal Files' Releases in Bengal This Friday

Kolkata: Vivek Agnihotri's much-awaited film 'The Bengal Files' is finally set to release in West Bengal this Friday, following a prolonged controversy that saw the film being blocked in the state since its original release in September last year. The film, which explores political and social issues in Bengal, faced significant hurdles after the BJP's recent electoral victory in the state.

Agnihotri's Struggle for Release

Soon after the BJP's win, Agnihotri took to social media platform X to express his frustration over the treatment of his earlier film, 'The Kashmir Files', which was also removed from cinema halls in Bengal. Referring to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he alleged that she personally banned 'The Bengal Files'. In a detailed post, he recounted the obstacles faced during the film's promotion and release.

"Our trailer launch was blocked. We were attacked and assaulted. Dozens of FIRs were filed against me. I was cancelled in Bengal. I couldn't even go to receive my award from the governor. But we never gave up. During these elections, we ensured the film was somehow shown to as many people as possible across Bengal. I am glad we didn't give up and fought in our own little way," Agnihotri posted, highlighting the challenges he endured.

Support from Distributors

Priya's Arijit Dutta, who is releasing the film on Friday, expressed his satisfaction with the development. "A censored film didn't get released in Bengal because of a party diktat. Not a single theatre could screen it while the rest of India watched it. There was so much curiosity about the film. I am glad Bengal will finally get to watch it," Dutta told TOI.

Satadeep Saha, the film's distributor, confirmed that the release would not be limited to Kolkata. "Not just Kolkata, we are working on a list of theatres across Bengal," Saha said, indicating a wide release across the state.

The film's release marks a significant moment for Agnihotri and his supporters, who have long awaited the opportunity for Bengal audiences to see the film. With the political landscape shifting, the release is seen as a victory for freedom of expression in the state.
