A destination wedding held at a riverside cremation site in Uttarakhand's Almora district has sparked widespread outrage, prompting the local administration to order a probe and issue a notice to the resort management that facilitated the event.
Wedding at a Sacred Site
The ceremony took place on April 25 at the confluence of the Ramganga and Badangad rivers in the Marchula area of Salt block, near Jim Corbett National Park. The site, traditionally used for last rites, was decorated by a couple from Ghaziabad for their wedding rituals, including the exchange of garlands. At least 50 people gathered, and loud music blared in the area close to the national park.
Social Media Backlash
Images and videos of the event circulated widely on social media, drawing sharp criticism from locals and social organizations. They called the wedding insensitive and disrespectful to cultural traditions. Social activist Narayan Singh Rawat emphasized that cremation grounds hold deep spiritual significance and are inappropriate for celebratory events.
Administrative Action
Tehsildar Abid Ali stated that prior administrative approval is mandatory for public events, which was not obtained in this case. He also highlighted safety concerns, as the area is prone to crocodile attacks. The administration has initiated an inquiry after serving notice to the resort. Resort manager Rakesh Sharma said the organizers were informed about the site's nature but chose to proceed with the rituals.
Broader Concerns
Officials observed that Uttarakhand's growing popularity as a destination wedding hub, coupled with a lack of clear guidelines, risks similar controversies in the future. The incident has renewed calls to balance tourism promotion with respect for local customs and sensitivities.
