In a notable achievement for women's grievance redressal, the Bihar State Women's Commission (BSWC) has successfully resolved 6,860 cases over the past year, significantly reducing a backlog that had accumulated over several years. According to the BSWC, a total of 9,751 cases were pending or received between 2021 and June 8, 2026, of which 6,860 cases have been disposed of through district-level camps and regular hearings at the commission's office.
Reconstitution and Case Load
The BSWC was reconstituted on June 9, 2025, under the leadership of chairperson Apsara and seven members. At that time, the commission inherited 6,345 pending cases from the period between 2021 and 2024. Additionally, 2,092 fresh complaints were received in 2025, and another 1,314 complaints were registered up to June 8, 2026, bringing the total caseload to 9,751 cases.
Mahila Aayog Aapke Dwar Initiative
To tackle the mounting backlog and ensure speedy justice for women, the BSWC launched the 'Mahila Aayog Aapke Dwar' initiative. Under this program, hearings were conducted directly in districts with a high number of pending cases, enabling complainants to access justice closer to their homes. Over the past year, the BSWC organized camps in 11 districts, including Patna, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Rohtas, Nalanda, Gaya, Samastipur, Bhojpur, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai.
Disposal Statistics
During these camps, hearings were conducted in 3,759 cases, resulting in the disposal of 3,592 cases, while action was initiated in another 250 cases. Patna recorded one of the highest disposal rates, with 674 out of 713 cases resolved. Similarly, 526 of 562 cases in Bhagalpur and 419 of 461 cases in Begusarai were successfully settled through the initiative.
The BSWC's efforts have been widely appreciated, as the resolution of such a large number of cases marks a significant step toward faster justice for women in Bihar. The commission continues to work on the remaining cases, aiming to further reduce the backlog and provide timely redressal to all complainants.
