Lucknow Artisans Craft Taziyas, Alams for Muharram

Lucknow: As the Islamic month of Muharram approaches, the narrow lanes of old Lucknow are bustling with activity as artisans work overnight to craft taziyas and alams to fulfill orders.

Muharram marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed along with 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala on the 10th day of the month in 680 AD.

“Taziya, which is a replica of ‘Rouza’ (tomb) of Imam Hussain, is kept as a symbol of remembrance of Karbala martyrs. The Azadars (mourners) take Tazias in processions to mourn the martyrs and bury them on the tenth of Muharram,” said Mehmood Abidi, exponent of Oral History.

“Alam in Islam is the flag of the army. Here Alam refers to the flag of Imam Hussain’s army. People carry them in processions along with Tazia. Alam and Taziya represent the symbols of solidarity and sacrifice,” he added.

Taziyas are made using bamboo frames, layers of paper, and colorful decorations. Their designs are often customized based on customer preferences. Alams are typically made from metals like brass and silver, featuring intricate designs.

In Kazmain, 59-year-old Qaim Abbas is continuing his family’s 80-year-old tradition. He works from afternoon until early morning. “This year my family and I have made nearly 50 taziyas, starting work six months in advance due to high demand,” he said.

Similarly, alam makers are also busy. At Dargah Hazrat Abbas, Ghazanfar Abbas and his family are working day and night to meet demand. “My family has been practicing this craft for over four decades,” he said.
