Bhumi Pednekar Praises OTT Platforms for Empowering Women in Indian Cinema at IFFD 2026
In a compelling address at the ongoing International Film Festival Delhi (IFFD) 2026, acclaimed actor Bhumi Pednekar shared insightful perspectives on how over-the-top (OTT) platforms are revolutionizing opportunities for women in Indian cinema. She emphasized that these digital avenues are fostering a narrative shift, allowing female artists to explore more diverse and courageous roles than ever before.
OTT as a Catalyst for Stronger Female Narratives
Pednekar articulated, "I feel with OTT, especially for women, the narrative has become a lot stronger, because a lot of those shows, a lot of those films are led by women." She elaborated that women have historically demonstrated bravery in script selection, but OTT platforms now provide the ideal stage to showcase this courage. This transformation is reshaping the cinematic landscape, offering unprecedented visibility and creative freedom for female-led projects.
Celebrating Delhi's Hosting of IFFD 2026
Alongside fellow filmmakers and actors, Pednekar expressed admiration for Delhi as the festival's host city. She remarked, "Delhi, of all the places, really deserved an International Film Festival... The scale at which it's happening, the number of people attending, the talks, seminars, and films... everything is operating at such a high level. And this is only the first year." The event, running from March 25 at Bharat Mandapam, features screenings, conversations, and industry engagements across New Delhi venues, attracting global participants.
Prioritizing Craft Over Relevance and Health Over Physical Demands
On maintaining a lasting career, Pednekar advised, "I think the biggest thing is that you should not stay relevant, you should just stay true to your craft, because relevance is very short lived. And it's exhausting. How long will you keep staying relevant? What's important is finding what your true talent is, understanding the artist in you. And constantly doing riyaz so that that never goes."
She also highlighted the critical importance of health and self-care for women in the film industry, particularly as they age. Pednekar explained that the physical demands of acting, such as weight fluctuations for roles, become more challenging over time due to the body's reduced capacity to handle such changes. She stressed that at a certain stage, prioritizing overall health and well-being should take precedence over drastic physical alterations for parts.
"I was doing this for many years, where I was increasing my weight, reducing it. Now I have reduced it a little, because as a woman, as your age increases, your body's ability to take that weight gain and weight loss reduces. So now I prioritise my health and my body over the parts, because at some age, women have to start doing that," she added.
Advice for Aspiring Women Actors
Sharing guidance for budding female performers, Pednekar encouraged resilience and discernment. She stated, "Even now in India, we think the world of films is very dangerous, but it's not. Many women have become very capable in this world. If you have a dream, there will be many people who tell you 'no,' but you have to listen to that 'yes.' Always stay safe and know which people are right and which are wrong. Experience will teach you that."
The International Film Festival Delhi continues to serve as a vibrant hub for cinematic exchange, underscoring the evolving dynamics of the entertainment industry and the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping inclusive storytelling.
