DC Crime: New Superman Spinoff Series in Development at HBO Max
DC Crime Superman Spinoff Series Announced

DC Studios and HBO Max are developing an exciting new Superman spinoff series titled DC Crime, according to reports from Deadline. The series will feature a unique true-crime documentary format with Jimmy Olsen from Superman taking on the hosting duties.

Series Format and Creative Team

Skyler Gisondo, who plays Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn's summer blockbuster Superman, will reprise his role as the host of this innovative series. The show is being developed as a true-crime docuseries, marking a fresh approach to superhero storytelling.

The creative force behind DC Crime comes from Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the talented minds responsible for Netflix's acclaimed crime satire series American Vandal that ran from 2017 to 2018. Both creators will write, executive produce, and showrun the new DC series.

Villain Focus and Production Details

The first season of DC Crime will center around one of DC's most iconic villains – Gorilla Grodd. This classic antagonist, created in 1959, is best known for his frequent battles with speedster superhero The Flash.

Grodd possesses extraordinary psychic powers and other enhanced abilities gained after his encounter with an alien spaceship. The character has previously appeared in DC's Arrow-verse, making him familiar to longtime DC fans.

On the production side, DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran will serve as executive producers, with Galen Vaisman overseeing the production process. This ensures the series maintains continuity with the broader DC universe.

Superman's Awards Recognition

In related news, James Gunn's Superman film has been submitted for consideration in the drama categories at the Golden Globes 2026, as reported by Variety. Warner Bros. has positioned the summer blockbuster in drama categories rather than traditional superhero classifications.

The studio has submitted Superman for best motion picture (drama), with acting nominations for David Corenswet in best actor (drama), Rachel Brosnahan for supporting actress, and Nicholas Hoult for supporting actor. Additional submissions include Gunn for directing and screenplay, plus original song for The Mighty Crabjoy's Theme, penned by Gunn, Eric Nally and Devin Williams.

This strategic move signals the filmmakers' intention to position the iconic superhero as more than just escapist entertainment, aiming for critical recognition in prestigious award categories.
