Hunger Games Prequel Teaser Reveals Haymitch's Origin Story
Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Teaser Released

The dystopian world of Panem is officially back. Studio Lionsgate has reignited global fan excitement by dropping the first thrilling teaser trailer for the next major cinematic chapter, 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping'.

This highly anticipated prequel, scheduled for a worldwide release on November 20, 2026, pulls audiences back to a darker, earlier period in Panem's brutal history. The story is set a full 24 years before the events of the original Hunger Games film that introduced us to Katniss Everdeen.

Return to the Second Quarter Quell

The newly unveiled teaser, released a full year ahead of the film's premiere, introduces actor Joseph Zada as a young Haymitch Abernathy. The narrative kicks off on the tense morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, a notoriously brutal edition known in series lore as the Second Quarter Quell.

This is the very Games that defined the fate and forged the deep-seated trauma of Haymitch, the character originally portrayed by Woody Harrelson as the cynical mentor to Katniss and Peeta. The footage presents a fierce, street-hardened young Haymitch preparing for his role in Panem's most notorious televised death match.

In a powerful moment, Zada's Abernathy declares, "I think these games are gonna be different," a line that echoes the historical significance of the Second Quarter Quell. This edition infamously doubled the tribute count from 24 to 48, making it a bloodier and more politically charged spectacle.

A Star-Studded Cast and Crew

Franchise veteran Francis Lawrence returns to direct the new film, ensuring a consistent vision for the series. The screenplay has been adapted by Billy Ray from Suzanne Collins' source novel, also titled 'Sunrise on the Reaping'.

Lionsgate has assembled an impressive, star-studded ensemble to bring this chapter to life. The cast features Ralph Fiennes as the authoritarian leader of Panem, alongside major names like Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Billy Porter, Jesse Plemons, and a host of other talented actors including Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, and Ben Wang.

Expanding a Blockbuster Franchise

The teaser's arrival capitalizes on renewed cultural interest in the franchise, fueled by the continued success of the original films and the 2023 prequel, 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes'. Since Suzanne Collins first published 'The Hunger Games' in 2008, the series has exploded into one of the most successful young-adult properties in global entertainment.

The first five films, led by Jennifer Lawrence, grossed more than $3.4 billion at the worldwide box office, cementing Panem's place as a lasting cinematic universe. Lionsgate is also expanding the franchise beyond film, with a large-scale theatrical production of 'The Hunger Games' having opened in London.

Produced by franchise stalwarts Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Colour Force, 'Sunrise on the Reaping' revisits a Panem not yet shaped by Katniss's rebellion. Instead, it focuses on a generation forced to fight and die under the Capitol's ruthless rule. With the teaser already sparking widespread discussion, the film is positioning itself as one of the most ambitious and tragic entries in the entire Hunger Games saga.
