Konkona Sensharma on Web Series Directing: 'Like Making Three Films'

Konkona Sensharma Embarks on Web Series Directing with Welcome To Khazi Mahal

Renowned actor-director Konkona Sensharma is venturing into the realm of long-format storytelling with her inaugural web series, a move she describes as substantially more challenging than traditional filmmaking. In a candid revelation, Sensharma emphasizes the immense effort required to helm a web series, likening the scale to producing three full-length films simultaneously.

The Demands of Directing a Web Series

"It takes a lot to direct a web series. The scale is large, it's like making three films," Sensharma asserts, highlighting the rigorous nature of the project. The series, titled Welcome To Khoya Mahal, is co-directed with Jaydeep Sarkar and is set against the backdrop of South Delhi. It features prominent stars Aditi Rao Hydari and Barun Sobti in key roles.

Sensharma, who has previously directed the critically acclaimed film A Death in the Gunj and acted in series such as Mumbai Diaries 26/11 and Killer Soup, shares that this new endeavor demanded extended shooting schedules and prolonged periods away from home. "It's a lot of work and I had to be away from home for a long time," she admits, reflecting on the sacrifices involved.

Collaborative Joy with Co-Stars

Despite the challenges, Sensharma expresses immense satisfaction with her collaboration with the cast. "But I loved working with both Barun and Aditi. They're complete sweethearts and my new favourite people," she says, underscoring the positive dynamics on set that made the demanding process more enjoyable.

Personal Life and Co-Parenting Spotlight

Away from the director's chair, Konkona Sensharma was recently spotted at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium alongside her ex-husband Ranvir Shorey and their son Haroon, attending an Indian Premier League match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. Shorey later shared a selfie from the outing on Instagram, captioning it with his elation over Mumbai Indians' victory, a moment that garnered widespread praise for their exemplary co-parenting.

When asked about the outing, Sensharma explains, "I wanted Haroon to have that experience of watching a match at the stadium. Haroon likes to watch cricket and I enjoy a match once in a while too. He also enjoys football." This insight offers a glimpse into her dedication to providing enriching experiences for her son, balancing her professional commitments with personal priorities.

The series Welcome To Khoya Mahal marks a significant expansion in Sensharma's creative portfolio, blending her directorial prowess with the expansive narrative possibilities of digital platforms. As she navigates this new chapter, her reflections on the demanding yet rewarding nature of web series production resonate with the evolving landscape of entertainment, where long-format content continues to gain prominence.
