Nagraj Manjule's OTT Leap: How Game of Thrones Inspired Matka King
Renowned filmmaker Nagraj Manjule, the creative force behind acclaimed films like "Fandry", "Sairat", and "Jhund", has made his highly anticipated debut on OTT platforms with the upcoming series "Matka King". Starring Vijay Varma in the lead role, this project represents a significant creative shift for the director, who reveals it wasn't a strategic career move but rather an organic evolution inspired by groundbreaking television.
The Unplanned Transition to Long-Form Storytelling
Manjule explains that his foray into OTT wasn't a calculated decision. "There was no such deliberation about whether I should do it or not," he shared in an interview. "When this idea emerged, my immediate response was, 'Let's do it'. Interestingly, when I met producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, he mentioned he had been contemplating this very subject independently."
The collaboration developed naturally as Manjule was already working on the concept with producers Ashwini Sidhwani and writer Ashish Aryan. "We combined our efforts, Amazon responded enthusiastically to the project, and production commenced," the filmmaker revealed, highlighting the organic nature of this creative partnership.
Game of Thrones: The Transformative Viewing Experience
Manjule credits the HBO fantasy epic "Game of Thrones" as the catalyst that changed his perspective on storytelling. During the lockdown period, numerous recommendations led him to watch the series based on George R.R. Martin's novels, and the experience proved transformative.
"Many people urged me to watch this show," Manjule recalled. "When I finally viewed it, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I recognized that OTT platforms possess a distinct narrative strength. The format allows audiences to immerse themselves in extended stories through binge-watching. 'Game of Thrones' particularly resonated with me." This revelation from the primarily Marathi-language filmmaker marked a turning point in how he approached narrative possibilities.
Matka King: A Departure from Previous Work
The eight-episode series "Matka King" follows Brij Bhatti, a sharp-minded and enterprising cotton trader navigating the rapidly changing landscape of 1960s Bombay. His quest for legitimacy and respect unfolds against a backdrop of bustling markets, crowded chawls, and shifting power dynamics. What begins as an ambitious concept soon develops its own momentum, drawing characters from across social strata into its compelling narrative.
This represents a notable departure for Manjule, who has built his reputation through powerful examinations of caste oppression in works like "Fandry", "Sairat", "Jhund", and the short film "Pistulya". The director acknowledges this creative divergence while emphasizing his commitment to following artistic instincts rather than industry trends.
Filmmaking Philosophy: Instinct Over Formula
"Whatever stories genuinely appeal to me, I'll pursue them," Manjule asserted. "I neither chase formulas for success nor live in fear of failure. As a human being, I acknowledge my capacity for mistakes. However, I value the freedom to take creative risks and explore new territories, as this challenges me to grow."
The filmmaker, who is preparing to direct a period wrestling film titled "Khashaba", emphasized the importance of authenticity in cinema. Referencing diverse films like "Homebound", "Sabar Bonda", "Dhurandhar", and "Pushpa", he argued that creators should remain true to their unique voices rather than replicating formulas simply because they have proven commercially successful elsewhere.
Personal Connection to the Matka World
Manjule's childhood experiences with the matka gambling system provided invaluable insight for creating the series' authentic world. He recalled acting as a proxy for others in placing small bets during his youth. "Elder community members would ask me to place one or two rupee bets at local paan or tea shops—significant amounts at that time," he remembered. "I would memorize their instructions precisely and execute them. Interestingly, I never participated in matka gambling for my own benefit."
This firsthand exposure to the matka ecosystem, combined with conversations with friends who actively participated in the practice, helped the director develop a nuanced understanding that informed the series' creation. "I observed this world and its intricate systems closely," Manjule explained.
Star-Studded Cast and Production Details
"Matka King" features an impressive ensemble cast including Kritika Kamra, Gulshan Grover, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, and Jamie Lever alongside lead actor Vijay Varma. The series represents a collaborative production effort between Manjule, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashwini Sidhwani, and Ashish Aryan under the banners of Roy Kapur Films, Aatpat, and SMR Productions.
Scheduled to debut on Prime Video on April 17, "Matka King" promises to deliver a compelling exploration of ambition, social dynamics, and personal transformation set against the vibrant backdrop of 1960s Bombay's underground gambling scene.
