Vijay Raghavendra Embarks on OTT Journey with Rakshasa Web Series
Renowned Kannada actor Vijay Raghavendra is poised to make his highly anticipated debut in the digital streaming space with the upcoming web series Rakshasa. In an exclusive conversation, the actor revealed that this project arrived at a perfect moment when he was actively seeking to explore opportunities within the Over-The-Top (OTT) platform landscape.
A Cultural and Supernatural Blend Rooted in North Karnataka
Directed by Tharun Sudheer, Rakshasa masterfully intertwines elements of crime, psychological drama, and supernatural themes, all deeply embedded within the rich cultural and social fabric of North Karnataka. Vijay expressed immense enthusiasm about the project, stating that the initial approach itself was thrilling because it aligned with his recent inclination toward digital content.
"The script was absolutely phenomenal," Vijay emphasized. "It carries the authentic essence of North Karnataka in its very soul. Being part of a narrative that delves into a specific dialect and cultural setting, which we rarely explore in such depth, felt incredibly special and unique."
The actor further elaborated on how the emotional and cultural texture of the region significantly influenced his performance. He noted that while audiences often connect with his familiar speaking style and image, this series required him to immerse himself in a distinct environment where speech rhythms, lifestyle, and cultural nuances differ markedly.
"Shooting on location in North Karnataka made a tremendous difference," he explained. "Being surrounded by that atmosphere, observing the local people, the land, and the energy, naturally helped me bridge the gap between my own identity and the character I was portraying. In many ways, the location itself performs half the acting for you."
Portraying a Vulnerable and Conflicted Police Officer
In Rakshasa, Vijay Raghavendra takes on the role of a police officer, but he is quick to clarify that this character diverges sharply from the law enforcement figures he has depicted in the past. Previously, his cop roles typically exhibited control and authority over their circumstances.
"This character is entirely different," Vijay revealed. "Here, the police officer is dominated by external circumstances and, at times, even by the people around him. He is vulnerable, internally conflicted, and constantly struggling to maintain his footing. Portraying such a complex individual was both challenging and profoundly rewarding, marking a significant journey in my acting career."
Regarding the creative process, Vijay praised director Tharun Sudheer for providing ample space to explore the character's emotional depth. They engaged in detailed discussions about the character's fears, moral dilemmas, and inner conflicts, which allowed Vijay to perform with greater authenticity and honesty.
Exploring Themes of Belief, Instinct, and Emotional Preparation
The series delves into the intriguing theme of belief versus instinct, which resonated deeply with Vijay on a personal level. He reflected on the spectrum between those who believe only in the tangible and those who acknowledge unseen forces like good, evil, or the supernatural.
"I believe there exists a delicate bridge between these two worlds, and that bridge is instinct," he shared. "Rakshasa operates precisely in that space, blurring the lines between reality and the unseen, making it highly relatable and thought-provoking."
Preparing for such an emotionally intense role required significant mental fortitude. Vijay described the process as carrying a torchlight in the dark, constantly reminding himself of the character's emotional state and narrative journey. One particularly impactful scene involved portraying utter helplessness, where the character clings to his oath despite collapsing circumstances.
"Such scenes are emotionally draining yet remain with you long after filming concludes," he admitted.
OTT Platforms: Expanding Horizons with Responsibility
When discussing differences between acting for web series and traditional films, Vijay asserted that the core of performance remains unchanged. However, he acknowledged that the series format allows for more detailed character exploration over extended arcs.
He also addressed the growing trend of OTT platforms enabling actors to portray darker, more layered characters. While he agrees that digital spaces offer greater freedom to explore grey areas and complex emotions, he advocates for a balanced approach.
"There must be a sense of responsibility," Vijay cautioned. "Exploring darker themes should serve the story's purpose rather than merely aiming for shock value. As an actor, I strive to expand my horizons while remaining mindful of the messages conveyed through my work."
The OTT Boom: A Boon for Kannada Cinema
Vijay Raghavendra views the OTT explosion as overwhelmingly beneficial for the Kannada film industry. It has created abundant opportunities for actors, writers, technicians, and directors alike, providing a platform for stories that might not have found theatrical release.
"OTT should be seen as an extension of cinema, not as competition," he remarked. "It has become a source of comfort and variety for audiences, catering to their growing appetite for diverse narratives. This expansion is a positive development for our entire industry."
A Busy Phase and Philosophical Reflections
Currently, Vijay is navigating a hectic period with Rakshasa releasing alongside the second phase of his film Seetharam Binoy. He describes feeling overwhelmed yet grateful for the simultaneous opportunities.
Reflecting on his career and personal growth, he concluded on a philosophical note: "Life has been both kind and testing. I am deeply thankful for the love and opportunities received, and I continuously learn from every challenge. At this stage, my focus is on pursuing honest work and evolving with each project."
