AKTU to award marks for discipline and social service

Lucknow: Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) has introduced a new academic framework aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, under which students will be awarded marks for discipline, ethical values, and participation in social service. This move is intended to strengthen student conduct and promote holistic development across the campus and affiliated colleges.

General Proficiency Course for BTech Students

According to AKTU Dean of Undergraduate Studies Anurag Tripathi, a compulsory ‘General Proficiency’ course will be introduced for all BTech students. The course will carry 50 marks and one academic credit. Of these, 10 marks will be reserved for discipline and values, including punctuality in attendance, adherence to rules, respect for teachers, and ethical behaviour.

Components of the Evaluation

The university has allocated 10 marks each for communication and leadership skills, co-curricular activities, teamwork and collaboration, and professional and technical skills. Students will also receive credit for participation in social service-related activities. The evaluation will be conducted semester-wise, with faculty members assessing students through continuous observation, participation in events, and overall performance. A designated faculty coordinator in each department will oversee the evaluation process.

Significance of the Decision

University officials stated that this decision is significant as it brings behavioural standards and social responsibility into the formal academic evaluation system, moving beyond conventional classroom performance. The step is expected to promote accountability, improve campus discipline, and encourage students to develop leadership, communication, and collaborative abilities alongside technical competence.

Tripathi emphasized that the university believes this measure will help create more responsible, disciplined, and socially aware graduates while giving institutional importance to values-based education under the NEP framework. The initiative reflects AKTU’s commitment to holistic student development and alignment with national education reforms.
