Significance of Ganga Saptami
Ganga Saptami holds immense significance for Hindus. The Ganga River is considered one of the most sacred rivers, and this day is regarded as highly auspicious for worshipping Goddess Ganga. It is believed that bathing in the Ganga on this day absolves devotees of their past sins and cures illnesses. Ganga water is thought to cleanse both body and mind, shielding against negativity. Devotees use Ganga water for Shivaling Abhishekam and immerse the ashes of deceased persons in the river to attain salvation. Goddess Ganga is known by several names, including Shubhra, Gange, Bhagirathi, and Vishnupadi, as she emerged from Lord Vishnu's foot.
Story Behind Ganga Saptami
According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Ganga first appeared on Earth on Ganga Dussehra. However, Saint Jahnu drank all the Ganga water, prompting the gods and King Bhagirath to request Sage Jahnu to release it. On Ganga Saptami, Goddess Ganga reappeared, hence the day is also called Jahnu Saptami. Another legend tells of King Bhagirath of Kosala, who was distressed by his ancestors' suffering due to bad karma. He performed severe penance to Lord Brahma, who promised that Ganga would descend to Earth to purify their souls. However, Brahma cautioned that Ganga's force could be destructive and advised Bhagirath to worship Lord Shiva, who could control her flow. Thus, Ganga is also known as Bhagirathi.
