Kolkata Nipah Virus Update: Male Nurse Shows Negative in Initial Test, Female Nurse Remains Critical

In a significant development in the ongoing Nipah virus situation in Kolkata, the samples of the 25-year-old male nurse receiving treatment have tested negative for the virus in the first test conducted during his course of treatment. This initial result offers a glimmer of hope, but health officials emphasize that a repeat test is mandatory before he can be declared free of the Nipah infection.

Health Department Sources Confirm Female Nurse Still Positive

Sources within the state health department have confirmed that the samples of the female nurse infected with the Nipah virus are still testing positive, and her condition is described as critical. This stark contrast highlights the varying severity of the infection in the two healthcare workers.

Protocol for Testing and Discharge

According to established medical protocols, samples from infected individuals must be tested every 10 days. For a patient to be considered for discharge, they must produce two consecutive negative samples, taken 24 hours apart, and be clinically stable. In line with this, throat swab, urine, and blood samples from both nurses at the Barasat hospital were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune on Wednesday.

Next Steps for the Male Nurse

A state health official provided details on the next steps: "Another set of samples from the male nurse is being sent for the consecutive test. If this result also shows negative, then he can be shifted out of the isolation ICU. However, he should be kept under observation for a few more days before being formally discharged."

Condition Updates from Barasat Hospital

Sources at the Barasat hospital reported that the male nurse's condition has improved significantly, and he is now clinically stable. The 25-year-old is being fed orally and is able to walk and talk, indicating positive progress in his recovery.

In contrast, the female nurse remains comatose and is under ventilation. She is receiving high-dose antibiotics and antiviral drugs as part of intensive care efforts to manage her critical state.

Overall Outbreak Status

Despite the recent scare surrounding the Nipah outbreak in Kolkata, the situation remains contained. So far, only two individuals have tested positive for the virus. All close contacts of these infected persons have tested negative, which is a reassuring sign for public health authorities and the community.

This development underscores the importance of rigorous testing protocols and continuous monitoring in managing infectious disease outbreaks. Health officials continue to urge vigilance while providing updates on the patients' conditions.
