Maharashtra Government Revamps Committee to Investigate Unnecessary Hysterectomy Surgeries
The Maharashtra government has taken a decisive step by reconstituting the state-level committee originally formed in 2023. This committee is tasked with investigating a disturbing racket involving unnecessary hysterectomy surgeries performed on female sugar cane cutters, a scandal that was first exposed in Beed district. The move aims to enhance the speed and effectiveness of the inquiry process, ensuring that justice is served for the affected women.
Accelerating District-Level Inquiries
Deputy chairperson of the legislative council, Dr Neelam Gorhe, emphasized the urgency of this initiative. She stated, "The definition of the scope of work for district-level committees will be expedited to ensure that the state-level committee functions with greater speed and effectiveness." These district-level committees will conduct thorough inquiries to determine whether unnecessary hysterectomy surgeries were carried out in private hospitals across Maharashtra over the past three years. This structured approach is designed to cover all potential cases and provide a comprehensive assessment of the situation.
Background and Committee Mandate
In 2023, a shocking racket came to light in Beed district, where female sugar cane cutters were subjected to unnecessary hysterectomy surgeries. In response, the state government formed a committee to investigate the matter. Now, with the reconstitution of this committee, Dr Gorhe has directed it to suggest robust measures to curb such unethical medical practices. Additionally, the committee is expected to formulate an annual schedule for its activities, ensuring ongoing vigilance and prevention of similar incidents in the future.
Healthcare Initiatives for Migrant Workers
Director of health services, Dr Vijay Kandewad, highlighted the broader healthcare efforts underway. He explained, "The department has undertaken the task of delivering healthcare services to approximately one lakh female sugar cane cutters." Alongside these women, about 5,000 children accompany the workers who migrate from 17 districts across the state for sugar cane harvesting. To address their needs comprehensively, a separate meeting will be organized. This meeting will focus on measures regarding the health and education of the children, as well as the provision of menstrual hygiene products and sanitary napkins to the women, ensuring their well-being during the migration period.
Commitment to Gender Parity and Public Health
The reconstitution of the committee underscores the Maharashtra government's commitment to addressing gender parity issues and safeguarding public health. By targeting unnecessary surgeries and enhancing healthcare services for vulnerable migrant workers, the state aims to set a precedent for ethical medical practices and social welfare. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to protecting the rights and health of female sugar cane cutters, who play a crucial role in the agricultural sector.
