Officials of the Mizoram animal husbandry and veterinary department reported on Thursday that African Swine Fever (ASF) has led to the deaths of 2,281 pigs, with an additional 683 pigs culled across six districts between January 1 and June 3. This marks a significant but reduced impact compared to the same period in 2025, when 4,629 pigs died and 1,451 were culled.
Recent Spike in Deaths
On Wednesday alone, 62 pigs succumbed to the disease, with the majority from Lungdai village in Kolasib district. The resurgence of ASF was first confirmed on January 16 in central Mizoram's Serchhip district.
Impact on Families
The outbreak has affected 752 pig farming families across 67 villages in six of the state's 11 districts. The number of deaths so far is less than half of the casualties reported during the same timeframe last year.
Official Statements: Department officials noted that while the situation remains serious, the reduced mortality indicates improved containment measures compared to the previous year.
