National Botanical Research Institute Honors Former Director with New Gladiolus Variety
In a heartfelt tribute to its former director, the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) in Lucknow has named a new gladiolus variety after the late Palpu Pushpangadan, a renowned botanist and Padma Shri awardee. The announcement was made during the institute's annual flower show, which commenced on Saturday, with the variety set to be officially unveiled on Sunday.
Legacy of a Distinguished Botanist
Palpu Pushpangadan, who passed away in December last year at the age of 81, served as the director of NBRI from 1999 to 2006. His tenure was marked by significant contributions to botanical science and public health. Under his guidance, NBRI launched 'herbal gulal', a product that gained global popularity, and developed various herbal formulations addressing skin disorders, digestive health, and health drinks.
Pushpangadan's academic legacy is equally impressive. According to NBRI director Ajit Kumar Shasany, he published over 500 research papers and articles in national and international journals, authored or edited 26 books, and contributed chapters on diverse topics such as taxonomy, plant breeding, conservation biology, biotechnology, and ethnobiology.
Introducing 'NBRI-Pushpangadan' Gladiolus
The new variety, named 'NBRI-Pushpangadan', is described as a novel, high-value gladiolus suitable for commercial cut flower production. It was developed through controlled hybridization, using the 'Neelima' (purple-colored) and 'Yellowstone' (yellow-colored) varieties, followed by systematic selection for superior floral quality and yield traits.
Shasany highlighted that the ornamental spikes and attractive color of this gladiolus make it ideal for the cut flower industry and floriculture trade, potentially boosting commercial opportunities in the sector.
Significance of the Tribute
This naming honors not only Pushpangadan's leadership at NBRI but also his broader impact on ethnobiology and plant science. The gesture underscores the institute's commitment to recognizing the contributions of its former leaders and promoting botanical innovation. The annual flower show serves as a fitting platform to celebrate such achievements, drawing attention to the ongoing research and developments in plant sciences.
As NBRI continues to advance in botanical research, this tribute to Palpu Pushpangadan stands as a testament to his enduring influence and the institute's dedication to excellence in science and horticulture.
