Winter conditions in Punjab are set to become more severe in the coming days. The Punjab Agricultural University has issued a clear warning to farmers and the public.
Temperature Drop and Weather Warnings
Dr PK Khingra, head of the Department of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology at PAU, shared critical observations. She noted that both day and night temperatures have stayed below normal across the state for several days.
Minimum temperatures have already fallen below 4 degrees Celsius at many locations. According to the India Meteorological Department, a severe cold wave is expected. Dense fog and ground frost will likely occur during the next few days.
Impact on Agriculture and Livestock
Dr Khingra warned that such extreme cold could harm field crops, orchards, vegetable crops, and livestock. Vegetables and newly planted orchards face particular vulnerability to cold waves and frost.
"These extreme conditions may have deleterious effects," she stated. Farmers must stay alert and take immediate action to protect their produce and animals.
Protective Measures for Crops
The expert provided specific advice for safeguarding crops. Light irrigation can help keep crops hydrated and maintain soil temperature. This simple step is crucial during frost conditions.
Application of mulches offers another effective method. Protection barriers placed in the north-west direction also help shield tender vegetable crops and fruits from the cold.
Farmers should make regular visits to their fields. They need to implement these measures promptly to minimize damage from the extreme cold and frost.
Care for Livestock During Cold Wave
Animals require special attention during harsh winter conditions. Dr Khingra advised keeping livestock indoors whenever possible. Nutrient-rich feed becomes essential to maintain their health.
"Animals should be kept indoors and given nutrient rich feed," she emphasized. Their health could suffer severely under these freezing conditions without proper care.
The PAU expert's warning comes as Punjab prepares for a challenging winter period. Farmers across the state must remain vigilant and proactive to protect their livelihoods from the impending weather threats.
