Two Health Workers Admitted in Kolkata After Contact with Nipah-Infected Nurse

Two close contacts of a female nurse battling a Nipah infection were admitted to the state-run Infectious Diseases and Beliaghata General Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday. Health officials confirmed the admission after the individuals developed mild symptoms.

Precautionary Measures and Monitoring

Sources revealed that the two contacts are a young doctor and a nurse from a Burdwan hospital. They were involved in treating the infected nurse before her transfer to Barasat. A senior health official stated that the admission is a precautionary measure.

Both individuals are clinically stable with no major symptoms so far. They will be kept under close monitoring in isolated cabins. Their samples have been sent for tests to confirm any infection.

Expanded Testing and Critical Cases

Meanwhile, two patients with severe symptoms have been admitted to Fortis Hospital at Anandapur. Joydeep Ghosh, an internal medicine consultant at the private hospital, said their blood and swab samples were sent to AIIMS in Kalyani for analysis. One of these patients is from an affected area.

In related developments, samples from twenty-two colleagues of the two Nipah-infected nurses have tested negative for the virus. This news provides some relief amid the ongoing outbreak.

Condition of Infected Nurses

The condition of both nurses, who are being treated at the Barasat hospital where they work, continues to be critical. Health authorities are closely watching their progress as they receive intensive care.

The two admitted contacts are among thirty-eight close contacts of the female nurse from Burdwan. All required medical attention is being provided to ensure their safety and prevent further spread.
