Jaipur: Two of six women who developed severe post-childbirth complications, including kidney failure, remain in coma and on ventilator support at PBM Hospital in Bikaner, while four others are recovering.
Cause Still Unknown
The cause of the complications remains unknown. A committee set up by the state government to investigate the cases has yet to submit its report.
Critical Cases
One of the two women in critical condition is Sharda. She was admitted on June 3 with a full-term pregnancy and underwent a caesarean section the next day. Initially low, her urine output stopped altogether on June 5. She had to be shifted to the ICU and put on dialysis. She has been in a coma since June 11.
Priti, admitted on May 15, underwent a preterm caesarean section. Her condition worsened and she was shifted to the ICU. She underwent multiple dialysis sessions and initially responded to treatment before developing breathing difficulties on June 5. She was placed on ventilator support and remains critical.
Recovering Patients
Among those recovering, Tara's condition has improved significantly. She was admitted on May 24 after postpartum haemorrhage and loss of urine output. She was discharged late Sunday after dialysis for kidney-related complications.
“Her kidney function has improved. She no longer requires dialysis and her urine output is normal. We have advised her to return for a follow-up after seven days,” said SP Medical College principal Dr Surendra Verma.
He added that another patient, Sahila, has improved considerably and is likely to be discharged Tuesday. Two other women are expected to be discharged next week after full recoveries. All three women remain under intensive care.
Risk Factors
Hospital authorities said many of the affected women had high-risk factors, including severe anaemia, hypertension, malnutrition and dehydration.
