Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, on Monday condemned the use of derogatory language against women during comedy shows, emphasizing that such acts are unacceptable and should invite legal action. Her remarks come amid a controversy over a viral clip from a stand-up comedy show in Gurugram, where an audience member linked treating a woman to biryani with being entitled to physical intimacy.
Legal Action for Inappropriate Humor
Speaking in Indore, the minister stated that whether on a comedy stage or any other public platform, those using inappropriate language against women must face consequences. She highlighted that the Centre had previously taken cognizance of similar instances and legal proceedings are already underway. No one has the right to make derogatory statements about women, negatively influencing society and public perception, she added.
Debate on Minimum Marriage Age for Women
Turning to broader policy discussions, Annapurna Devi addressed the ongoing debate over raising the legal minimum age of marriage for women. She noted that the issue requires comprehensive deliberations at the social level. Currently, marriages involving males under 21 years and females under 18 years are classified as child marriages in India.
Uniform Civil Code and Polygamy
Commenting on polygamy and live-in relationships, which have sparked debate amid the push for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Madhya Pradesh, the minister said that while certain legal frameworks exist, mindset changes must be driven by community engagement and grassroots awareness. She added that a high-level committee is currently touring the state, gathering public feedback on the UCC.
Review of Central Welfare Programmes
Earlier in the day, the minister reviewed central welfare programmes at the Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development in Gommatgiri. The institute serves as a major regional training hub for stakeholders across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat under key central schemes like Mission Shakti, Mission Vatsalya, and Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0.
Focus on Early Childhood Development
Highlighting that scientific studies show 85% of a child’s brain development occurs by age six, Annapurna Devi underlined the government’s focus on early childhood education, maternal health, and nutrition through public campaigns like Poshan Maah.
