Haryana's Healthcare Milestone: 1.9 Lakh Free Dialysis Sessions and Perfect Transplant Record

In a significant boost to public health infrastructure, hospitals across Haryana have delivered close to 1.9 lakh free dialysis sessions over the past year. This remarkable achievement coincides with the state's premier medical institute, PGIMS-Rohtak, recording an impeccable 100% success rate for its expanded renal transplant programme. The surge in service delivery marks a substantial expansion in Haryana's capacity to combat chronic kidney disease (CKD) under a government-funded universal care initiative.

Unprecedented Success in Renal Transplants

Additional Chief Secretary for Health and Family Welfare, Sumita Misra, highlighted the consistent progress of the programme since its inception in early 2023. Between February 2023 and April 2026, the nephrology department at PGIMS-Rohtak completed 34 renal transplants without a single failure, setting a new benchmark in medical excellence.

"The transplant programme began with two successful cadaveric transplants and has since expanded steadily," Misra stated. "We witnessed 10 transplants in 2024, 17 in 2025, and four have already been completed in 2026. This reflects not only improved clinical capacity but also growing public trust in our healthcare system."

Evolution of Donor Patterns and Comprehensive CKD Strategy

While the programme initially relied on cadaveric donations, health officials have observed a notable recent increase in living donor transplants. Misra attributed this positive shift to enhanced community awareness and active participation, indicating a broader societal engagement with critical health issues.

The state's comprehensive strategy against chronic kidney disease encompasses multiple facets:

  • Free dialysis services across all facilities
  • Specialist care from trained nephrologists
  • Efficient patient intake systems
  • Robust infrastructure development

Breakdown of Dialysis Services and Patient Outreach

Of the 1.9 lakh free dialysis sessions provided statewide during the 2025-26 period, PGIMS-Rohtak alone conducted 20,466 sessions. The institute also offered free consultations and medicines, demonstrating a holistic approach to patient care. In the last year, PGIMS-Rohtak registered between 400 and 500 new chronic kidney disease patients, indicating both the scale of the problem and the institute's capacity to address it.

Statewide Infrastructure and Government Support

Dialysis facilities are now fully operational at PGIMS-Rohtak and all district-level hospitals across Haryana, ensuring geographical accessibility for patients throughout the state. Under standing orders from the Chief Minister, the state government continues to provide essential medicines and diagnostic support at no cost to CKD patients. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the financial burden associated with long-term renal care, making treatment accessible to all socioeconomic groups.

The combined achievements in dialysis provision and transplant success represent a major advancement in Haryana's healthcare landscape, offering hope and improved quality of life to thousands of patients battling kidney disease.
