Udupi District Hospital Leads Digital Healthcare Revolution in Karnataka
Udupi Hospital Advances Digital Healthcare with ABHA Integration

Udupi District Hospital Pioneers Digital Healthcare Transformation in Karnataka

The District Hospital located in Ajjarkad, Udupi, is achieving remarkable strides in its journey toward complete digitalization, successfully automating every facet of patient care from initial registration to laboratory diagnostics and comprehensive treatment plans. As one of only four districts selected for the Karnataka state government's innovative pilot project, this hospital is at the forefront of modernizing healthcare delivery across the region.

Impressive Implementation and High Patient Volume

District surgeon Dr. Ashok H. revealed to TOI that through a strategic collaboration with the private agency Drucare, the initiative has already exceeded a 50% implementation rate. This accomplishment is particularly notable given the hospital's substantial daily workload, which handles approximately 800 outpatient visits. The digital process commences with patient registration at the reception using an Android mobile phone application, where ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) registration is simultaneously completed through the same app.

Comprehensive Digital Documentation and Real-Time Access

All medical practitioners at the hospital have been equipped with tablets, enabling them to efficiently review patient complaints and medical histories. Dr. Ashok elaborated that every stage of treatment for economically disadvantaged patients visiting the government facility is meticulously documented online via the digital platform managed by Drucare. Staff members register patients utilizing their Aadhaar numbers or mobile numbers linked to the ABHA app.

Doctors utilize the software to record diagnoses, medical advice, prescribed medications, and treatment protocols. When investigations such as lab tests are recommended, these requests are transmitted directly to the laboratory. Subsequently, laboratory reports are uploaded to the application, allowing doctors to access them in real-time. Patients also benefit from this system, as they can view their reports through the app. Even if patients forget to bring previous medical documents, doctors can retrieve them using the ABHA number within the application.

Progress and Future Enhancements

Although the automation initiative commenced in October of the previous year, Udupi has demonstrated significant advancement compared to other pilot districts, including Dharwad, Ballari, and Tumakuru. Dr. Ashok emphasized that the hospital has submitted various recommendations to further refine the digital transformation process. Key suggestions involve granting access to postgraduate medical trainees to assist with registration during peak hours, thereby alleviating congestion.

Once these proposals are thoroughly evaluated and incorporated, the hospital anticipates achieving full 100% success in its digital transformation efforts. This progressive approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures more transparent and accessible healthcare services for all patients, setting a benchmark for other institutions in the state.
