Kolkata Veterinarians Perform Eastern India's First Canine Otoendoscopy
In a groundbreaking development for veterinary medicine in eastern India, a 5-year-old female golden retriever named Coco has become the first patient to undergo an otoendoscopy procedure in Kolkata. This advanced diagnostic technique, performed to investigate a persistent ear condition that has plagued the dog since 2024, represents a significant leap forward in non-invasive animal healthcare.
Cutting-Edge Technology for Complex Diagnoses
Otoendoscopy utilizes a high-resolution camera attached to a slender, flexible endoscope, allowing veterinarians to visually examine the deepest recesses of the ear canal in dogs and cats. This technology enables precise diagnosis and facilitates minimally invasive treatment, eliminating the necessity for traditional, more traumatic surgical interventions.
"Diagnosing Coco's ear condition was extremely challenging due to the complex anatomy of the canine ear," explained Soumi Mondal, a veterinarian at the Animal Health Pathology Lab (AHPL). "Dogs and cats possess L-shaped ear canals, with a vertical canal running down the head and a horizontal canal leading to the eardrum, making internal visualization difficult without specialized tools."
A Persistent Medical Mystery Solved
Coco had been suffering from a severe ear infection characterized by significant redness and extreme, debilitating itching. Her owner, Tripti Saha, a former central government employee, recounted a frustrating year-long medical journey.
"I visited many veterinary doctors and continued treatments as per their advice, but the problem multiplied due to long-term use of antibiotics," Saha recalled. A conventional swab test performed a year ago to identify bacteria, yeast, or mites had failed to resolve the issue, leading to the pursuit of this novel diagnostic approach, for which Saha invested Rs 10,000.
Revealing a Rare Underlying Condition
The otoendoscopic examination, prescribed by veterinary endoscopic and laparoscopic surgeon Suprodip Mondal, revealed the root cause of Coco's suffering.
"In Coco's case, we found she has been suffering from chronic, recurrent otitis—an infection or inflammation of the middle ear—that had not responded to conventional antibiotic therapy," stated Mondal.
The detailed procedure, conducted on a Saturday, provided a clear internal view. "The otoendoscopic examination of the eardrum and middle ear revealed the underlying cause was Primary Secretory Otitis Media," said Shamindra Nath Sarkar, a virologist at AHPL. "This is a condition where thick secretions accumulate within the middle ear, which in Coco's case resulted in a whitish scarring and thickening of the eardrum."
Implications for Veterinary Care
This maiden procedure in eastern India highlights the growing sophistication of veterinary diagnostics available in the region. The successful application of otoendoscopy in Kolkata sets a precedent for treating complex otological issues in pets with greater accuracy and less invasiveness, potentially improving recovery times and outcomes for countless animals suffering from similar chronic ear diseases.
