In a high-stakes medical operation, a donor heart was transported 98 kilometers from Rohtak to Delhi in a mere 85 minutes on Thursday, granting a 26-year-old man battling end-stage heart failure a critical second chance at life. The heart traveled through a meticulously planned green corridor, with police from both cities clearing traffic to ensure it reached within the narrow viability window essential for a successful transplant.
Recipient's Critical Condition and Transplant Urgency
The recipient was suffering from advanced dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart weakens and becomes unable to pump blood effectively. With all other treatment options exhausted, a heart transplant was his only viable survival option. Doctors emphasized the urgency, as delays could have rendered the organ non-viable, jeopardizing the patient's life.
Donor's Tragic Story and Family's Generous Decision
The donor was a 37-year-old man who had been found unconscious and admitted to Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak with a severe brain hemorrhage. After being declared brain dead, his family made the compassionate decision to consent to organ donation, enabling multiple life-saving transplants. Doctors began the organ retrieval process around 2:20 pm. The heart left Rohtak at 2:50 pm and arrived at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Okhla, Delhi, by 4:15 pm. Delhi and Rohtak police collaborated to create a seamless green corridor, ensuring uninterrupted passage. Dr. Z S Meherwal, Chairman of Adult CTVS at Fortis Escorts, Okhla, highlighted the importance of this coordination, stating, "The success of such transplants depends on precise coordination and rapid transport. Every minute is critical to preserve the organ's viability."
Transplant Success and Patient Monitoring
The transplant was performed immediately after the heart's arrival, and the patient is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under close monitoring. Medical teams are optimistic about his recovery, given the timely intervention and successful surgical procedure.

In addition to the heart, other organs from the donor were allocated as per standard medical protocols. The lungs were sent to Artemis Hospital, the liver and pancreas to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), while the kidneys and corneas were retained at PGIMS Rohtak for transplants there.
