A 41-year-old HIV-positive patient successfully underwent a living-donor kidney transplant at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Lucknow. The patient was diagnosed with HIV in 2018 and later developed end-stage renal disease, requiring dialysis since 2023. Despite receiving antiretroviral therapy, he struggled to find a transplant centre willing to perform the procedure.
Multidisciplinary Team Steps In
In January 2026, the patient was referred to Max Hospital. A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Venkatesh Thammishetty, along with urologists Dr. Rahul Yadav and Dr. Aditya Kumar Sharma, conducted a thorough evaluation. The patient's HIV treatment was carefully adjusted to meet post-transplant requirements.
Wife Volunteers as Donor
The patient's wife volunteered as the donor. After compatibility tests, the transplant was performed successfully. The patient recovered steadily and was discharged within a week, no longer requiring dialysis.
Positive Outcomes with Strict Protocols
Doctors emphasized that such procedures demand precise planning, strict protocols, and close monitoring, but they can yield positive results. Both the donor and recipient are stable, and the patient is gradually resuming normal life under a supervised regimen.
