India's Supplements Market Booms as FSSAI Busts Illegal Hub in Delhi
India's Supplements Market Booms; FSSAI Busts Illegal Hub

Younger generations are increasingly focusing on fitness and wellness, driving the nutritional supplements market to new heights. According to the Market Analysis Report, India's nutritional supplements market size was estimated at USD 42.97 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.1% from 2025 to 2030. This growth is fueled by a young population, rising disposable incomes, and heightened health awareness.

However, this surge has also created opportunities for illegal trade practices that harm consumers. In a recent operation, officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Northern Regional Office, along with Central Food Safety Officers and Delhi Police, raided an illegal distribution hub in Delhi's Najafgarh. The hub dealt in banned performance-enhancing drugs and expired health supplements.

The FSSAI team flagged serious violations, including the sale of health supplements without a valid food license. They seized approximately 45 kg of expired gainers and whey protein, while 85 kg of protein and creatine products are under scrutiny for safety checks. Additionally, around 2,800 capsules and tablets, along with 11 injectable units of banned substances, were confiscated. Among these were 1,500 capsules of Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs) and Adenosine Monophosphate injections.

What is Protein Powder?

Protein powder is a nutritional supplement made by extracting protein from plant or animal sources. Naturally occurring carbohydrates, minerals, fats, and fibers are removed, and supplementary nutrients or sweeteners may be added. The word 'protein' comes from the Greek word 'protas,' meaning 'of primary importance,' as it is crucial for maintaining a healthy body.

Protein aids in muscle growth, hair growth, tissue repair, and antibody functioning. While meat is a common protein source, many plants offer excellent protein with fewer calories. Whey protein is derived from cheese manufacturing byproducts.

How Much Protein is Important?

According to the USDA, protein requirements depend on age, weight, activity level, and health needs. Adults are generally recommended to consume 1.2 to 2.0 grams per kilogram of body weight.

Importance of Homemade Protein Powder

Homemade protein powder can be tailored to individual nutritional needs. Sweeteners like dates, agave syrup, or honey can be added, but those with diabetes may avoid fruits and sweeteners.

How to Make Homemade Protein Powder
