In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at the paediatric surgery department of King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow successfully treated an 11-year-old boy suffering from a rare congenital bile duct condition using advanced robotic surgery. The patient, a resident of Kanpur, was diagnosed with a choledochal cyst—a condition characterized by an abnormal enlargement of the bile duct. He was admitted to KGMU on May 5 after undergoing treatment at multiple hospitals without success.
The surgical team, led by Prof J D Rawat, head of the department, performed the robotic procedure on May 26. During the operation, the surgeons removed the abnormal duct and constructed a new pathway to facilitate bile flow from the liver to the intestine. The minimally invasive technique ensured precision and faster recovery. Doctors confirmed that the child recovered well and was discharged on Thursday.
The team included Dr Sudhir Singh, Dr Gurmeet Singh, Dr Kriti Patel, Dr Ayushi Bagga, and nursing staff. This case highlights the growing expertise in robotic surgery at KGMU, offering hope for patients with complex congenital conditions.
