Kolkata Woman Undergoes Complex Lung Washing Procedure After Year-Long Struggle
A 34-year-old woman from Behrampore, who had been suffering from persistent breathlessness and a dry cough for an entire year, has successfully undergone a highly specialized surgical procedure known as Whole Lung Lavage at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The medical team washed her lungs using an astonishing 11 litres of saline solution during the operation. Following this intensive treatment, the patient is now breathing comfortably without requiring any supplemental oxygen support.
Critical Condition and Diagnosis
When the mother of a 12-year-old child was initially brought to the hospital, her condition was extremely critical. Her oxygen saturation levels had plummeted to approximately 80% while breathing room air, which indicated a severe and dangerous respiratory compromise. To investigate further, doctors conducted a CT scan of her chest, which revealed a distinctive "crazy paving" pattern. This unusual finding raised immediate suspicion of an uncommon and serious lung disease.
Upon closer examination, medical professionals discovered milky white material accumulating inside her lungs. Subsequent diagnostic tests confirmed the alarming diagnosis: Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis. This is a rare disorder characterized by the abnormal accumulation of proteinaceous material within the air sacs of the lungs, which severely impairs the vital process of oxygen exchange.
The Whole Lung Lavage Procedure
Since conventional medications offer limited benefits for treating Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis, the medical team decided to perform the Whole Lung Lavage procedure. This complex surgical intervention involves isolating one lung under general anesthesia and then repeatedly washing the diseased lung with warm saline solution to meticulously remove the abnormal protein deposits. The procedure is both delicate and demanding, requiring precise coordination and expertise.
